چکیده

Abstract We examine Van Wynsberghe and Robbins (JAMA 25:719-735, 2019) critique of the need for Artificial Moral Agents (AMAs) its rebuttal by Formosa Ryan 10.1007/s00146-020-01089-6, 2020) set against a neo-Aristotelian ethical background. Neither essay nor Ryan’s is explicitly framed within teachings specific school. The former appeals to lack “both empirical intuitive support” (Van 2019, p. 721) AMAs, latter opts “argumentative breadth over depth”, meaning provide “the essential groundwork making an all things considered judgment regarding moral case building AMAs” (Formosa pp. 1–2). Although this strategy may benefit their acceptability, it also detract from rootedness, coherence, persuasiveness, characteristics often associated with consolidated traditions. Neo-Aristotelian ethics, backed distinctive philosophical anthropology worldview, summoned fill gap as standard test these two opposing claims. It provides substantive account agency through theory voluntary action; explains how action tied intelligent autonomous human life; distinguishes machine operations actions categories poiesis praxis respectively. This standpoint reveals that while be right in rejecting there are deeper, more fundamental reasons. In addition, despite disagreeing defense call nuanced context-dependent approach, similar practical wisdom, becomes expedient.

Agent Causation in a Neo-Aristotelian Metaphysics

Freedom and moral responsibility have one foot in the practical realm of human affairs and the other in the esoteric realm of fundamental metaphysics—or so we believe. This has been denied, especially in the metaphysics-bashing era occupying the first two-thirds or so of the twentieth century, traces of which linger in the present day. But the reasons for this denial seem to us quite implausibl...

A Neo-Aristotelian Theory of Interactive Drama

Interactive drama has been discussed for a number of years as a new form of AI-based interactive entertainment (Laurel 1986, Bates 1992). While there has been substantial technical progress in building believable agents (Bates, Loyall and Reilly 1992, Blumberg 1996, HayesRoth, van Gent and Huber 1996), and some technical progress in interactive plot (Weyhrauch 1997), no work has yet been comple...

One’s views about causal powers are shaped by—and shape—one’s views concerning properties, causation, laws of nature and modality. It is no surprise, then, that views about the nature of causal powers are generally embedde...

Moral Intelligence for Human and Artificial Agents

A specific form of human and artificial intelligence is needed for an efficient practice or a successful implementation of a moral code. The actual stage and rate of progress in AI studies are generated by their orientation to develop mainly an abstract intelligence form. We propose the integrated analysis of the intelligence as of the morality, considered as systems with internal structure. Is...

Measuring moral thinking from a neo-Kohlbergian perspective

The neo-Kohlbergian model revises and extends Lawrence Kohlberg’s model of moral reasoning development to better reflect advances in research and theory. In moving from Kohlberg’s global stage model to a multi-process description of moral functioning, these modifications are most evident in the ways in which moral thinking is described, measured, and interpreted. This article highlights the two...
